Learning about Toric Contact Lenses

Corrective contact lenses are often used to correct vision problems such as near sight problems and toric contact lenses are corrective lenses. There are many misconceptions and questions about toric lenses and if you have questions or concerns about these types of lenses then continue reading as the following paragraphs will elaborate on facts about toric contact lenses.

Toric Contact lenses are primarily of two types with two different powers or curvatures and depending on the type of power and curvature, these lenses can cure astigmatism, myopia and even hyperopia. If the person’s single eye is affected by a problem such as astigmatism then the person should use toric contact lenses only in the affected eye and ordinary spherical lenses should be used for the other eye. Toric lenses are generally recommended to people who have a vision problem of more than +1.00 or – 1.00 diopter and other corrective methods can be used if the vision problem is lesser than these numbers.

Like most of the other contact lenses, toric contact lenses can either have a soft gas permeable or a hard gas permeable. Soft gas permeable toric lenses are preferred by many people over the rigid lenses since soft lenses are more comfortable to wear and a larger number of retailers stock these lenses. Toric lenses are not spherical and unlike other lenses toric lenses have an up and down side instead of the regular definite power for the whole lens. Due to this factor toric contact lenses have tiny marks to allow the user to understand which side has to be up and which side has to be down. Toric contact lenses are comparatively expensive since these are special corrective lenses and the user may be required to order these lenses from a specialist shop.

Although it is possible to get disposable and one time toric contact lenses these lenses are mainly meant to be used several times and opting for disposable toric lenses can work out to be expensive and impractical in most cases. Since toric lenses are corrective lenses and not cosmetic lenses, these lenses are available in a transparent color and toric lenses are not available in fancy colors such as green, blue and brown.

It is crucial to follow the instructions of the manufacturer while storing these contact lenses and while they are not being used, suitable covers should be used to prevent these lenses from dust particles or other harmful matter.
